  • Penalty-kicks were introduced to FIFA World Cup final tournament in 1978. Since both two knock-out matches ended within 120 minutes that year, the first penalty-kicks happened in 1982 World Cup.
    The first game was decided by PSO was Germany vs France and the last was Uruguay vs Ghana 2010.
  • Before 1978, there were 80 knock-out matches from 1930 to 1974, 76 were decided within 120 minutes, the rest 4 matches, which happened in 1934 and 1938, were decided by replays.
  • There were no knock-out matches in 1950.
  • All 42 knock-out matches from 1954 to 1974 were decided within 120 minutes, so there were no replays needed.

Most lost:
England 3 (0%) and Italy 3 (25%)
England never won a single PSO match in World Cup, lost all 3 times. Italy played 4 PSO in World Cup history lost 3 and won the 2006's final against France.
By the way, Italy is the only team with twice opportunities decide World Cup final in PSO, lost in 1994 and won at 2006
